An Introduction to Mind-Body Medicines For Mental Health

A holistic approach to well-being implies focusing on the whole person, that is the mind, body, and the spirit. The link between a person's thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors and their mental health is known as the mind-body connection. While scientists have long recognized that our emotions have an impact on our bodies, we are only now beginning to comprehend how emotions affect our health and lifespan

Mind-body medicines are a group of healing therapies that enhances the connection of the mind with the body to induce relaxation and improve overall health and well-being. These forms of therapy do not use medicines and can be used with conventional forms of therapy or as an alternative form as well.

It considers an approach that respects and promotes each person's potential for self-awareness and self-care to be vital, and it stresses practices based on this approach. Spirituality has been found to be important in the quality of life, satisfaction with family and friends, and positive mental and physical health. The key is to train the mind to focus without any distractions because it is in this state that a person may be able to improve their health. Though it may take a longer time for these practices to show their effects, the results are more durable and broader than when taking pharmacological drugs

Your emotions and ideas can have an impact on your health. Emotions that are freely felt and expressed without judgment or attachment tend to flow easily without negatively harming our health. Repressed emotions, on the other hand, can drain mental energy, have a detrimental impact on the body, and lead to health issues. Chronic stress is caused by negative attitudes and emotions of helplessness and hopelessness, which disrupts the body's hormone balance, depletes the brain chemicals needed for happiness, and weakens the immune system. Chronic stress has been shown to shorten our lives. Positive emotions serve a scientific purpose: they aid in the recovery of the body from the detrimental consequences of long-term negative emotions. As a result, fostering positivity through time can assist us in becoming more resilient in the face of adversity.

While a large proportion of people with anxiety and depression do not receive conventional treatments, the mind-body approach offers more accessible and acceptable alternatives to conventional mental health treatments. Treatments for depression, anxiety, and other chronic health issues are increasingly relying on mind-body techniques. Mind-body techniques are typically a more accessible and acceptable supplement or alternative to traditional mental health care.

The four most common mind-body approaches are

  1.   Biofeedback- Biofeedback is a process by which patients learn to control bodily processes which are normally involuntary. A therapist or a biofeedback practitioner measures a biological process like muscle tension and provides feedback that enhances an individual's awareness of their own body and provides ways to establish control over their physiological system. This serves as an example to control other aspects of their life, such as relationships, emotions, and work activity. This may be used for people with ADHD, anxiety, depression, or addiction. Since stress plays an important role in the mental and emotional well-being of a person, biofeedback provides a tool to facilitate relaxation training.

  2. Hypnotherapy-  It is a type of psychotherapy where hypnosis is used during counselling to relax the patient. There are two main hypnotherapies, suggestion therapy, and analysis. Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation and focused attention to achieve a heightened state of awareness called a trance. This allows people to explore painful thoughts, feelings, and memories they might have hidden from their conscious minds. This hidden feeling may help the patient view real-life situations, feelings, and events in a “different light". Hypnotherapy can help a person stop smoking or nail-biting.  It can also be used for sleep disorders, phobia, addiction, PTSD, and grief of a lost one

  3. Meditation- All meditative practices aim to gain control over the restless and preoccupied mind. The combination of focused attention along with breathing techniques can accomplish this nicely. Mindfulness meditation focuses more on the mind than on the body and is more cognitively related. The regular practice of this will lead to improved mood, less anxiety, greater satisfaction with daily activities, less reactivity, improved patience, and tolerance, as well as more compassion, empathy, and joy.  They have also seen to show results in psychosomatic treatments such as PTSD, ADHD, substance abuse, and anxiety disorder

  4. Qigong- It is a Chinese technique that involves the use of energy to optimize energy within the mind and the body. Studies have demonstrated that consistent Qigong practice has a sustained positive influence on many psychiatric disorders. It enhances awareness of the body, including somatic symptoms that may signal emotional distress. It is made out of three fundamental kinds of energy, of which Qi is one of the fundamental kinds of energy, Shen is the spiritual energy and Jing is the sexual energy. Since it is believed that imbalances in Qi, Shen, or Jing can be manifested as mental or psychosomatic illnesses, Qigong is carried out with the aim to restore the imbalance between the biological, spiritual, and energetic aspects of the body.
